Carved in a state of plein air, ‘Sunset Drives’ encompasses a moment of stillness on the hillside of a reserve along the northeast edge of Nebraska, teetering on the border of the prairies and bluffs that lie on either side of the tree lines. It expands upon feelings of joy that accompany a moment of spontaneous making, and the lightness of “whatever happens with this one, happens.” It’s a point in the evening that’s sought out after a day of discussions, meals shared, art made, and laughs had with someone who inspires me every day. It may be site specific to myself and those I shared the creative session with, but this landscape rendition and these emotions feel accessible to all. Wispy skies, perfectly cosmic clusters of branches that work in harmony with one another, and land that expands far beyond ourselves.
