Getting to know Belle

Smiling Belle Intro.jpeg

Belle Hulne is a practicing printmaker who currently creates her art in the great state of Minnesota. She works in methods far beyond her years, intrigued by the observation of makers that came before her. Belle was taught the art of relief, intaglio, and screen printing processes at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she graduated with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in 2020. Belle has always been fascinated with the natural environments surrounding the places we call home, and in recent years she’s had the pleasure of rekindling a relationship with the expansive Northern Shores of Lake Superior. Belle carves highly rendered observations of critical environments, capturing the exact moment in time she was present to experience the space. The intentionality being to uplift the external spaces we should be protecting and bringing those environments into the residential homes we occupy. With the understanding that we could not exist without the thriving ecosystems we seek to admire and destroy for the sake of convenience and comfort.

What is
Relief Printmaking?

Relief printmaking is the art of using a reduction process to carve an image into a surface such as wood or linoleum. Using carving tools, the surface is cut into revealing an impression. Everything not carved is what you see as the ‘positive’ impression printed with ink. Everything carved out of the block is considered the ‘negative’ white space of the paper. Once finished, the block is sealed and inked using a brayer. An Etching Press is operated by hand to move the block under a cylindrical drum. The print is carefully removed and then hand numbered, titled, and signed. Belle often works in closed editions, meaning her blocks will never be inked and reproduced after the designated amount is printed. Closed original editions help ensure that you are investing in a timeless work that was carefully handled by Belle through the entire printmaking process and will now be on your wall to enjoy for years to come!

I am open to commission requests!

My main form of commissions are acrylic paintings of houses for my "A Piece of Home" Series.

I also accept relief print commissions, either as an exclusive edition purchased entirely by you, or an edition where you take home the first print and the rest are sold through Art With Belle depending on the final image.

Please message me here with a short description of your request, any relevant information or images, and your contact information. I will get back to you shortly!
